Thermoplastic rayon composites offer the potential for lightweight construction and a high degree of crash-resistance. CORDENKA® reinforced composites exhibit fiber properties that combine an elastic modulus of 19,5 GPa with an elongation at break of 12%, and therefore possess a significant energy absorption capacity.
CORDENKA® as reinforcing material provides more than twice the elastic modulus of polypropylene while tensile strength and impact strength are actually tripled.
Using injection-molding, components with a density of 1,0 g/cm³ can be manufactured. Even when exposed to extremely low temperatures, such components continue to exhibit ductile traits clearly superior to glass-fiber reinforced polypropylene.
Furthermore, unlike polypropylene reinforced with glass-fiber, polypropylene-rayon (PP-Rayon) shows no abrasion with machines or tools during injection-molding. PP-Rayon, with the possibilities it offers for lightweight construction and energy absorption capacity, has great potential for applications in vehicle construction.
So, of course, Cordenka works together with partners from research and industry to develop those specific areas of application. In addition, work is also underway on developments that will allow the application of CORDENKA in thermoset composites as well.
